Novation re-hash their launchpad midi controller (... adds 'mini' to its moniker)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, January 11, 2014, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear
words & image source/photographer : Eksovichea Tito Hak

The launchpad mini is essentially a more refined re-hash of the launchpad by novation. Although they've made it more compact and named it the 'mini' version, its in no way un-usably fiddly to use or handle, its still fully usable in a competent professional manner. In fact despite the downsize in dimensions the design language used has been totally revamped to throw minimalist clean lines at your eyeballs to feast on. More over there isn'...

Connect your iPad to a Pioneer USB controller with this WeCai cable... . . . allows for independent stereo main room out/post mix and pre-mix monitoring audio signals

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, April 18, 2013, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

I passed over it a couple of weeks ago, but the introduction of a single cable seems a bit more revolutionary then it did at the time. The idea of connecting a fully featured two deck metaphor controller to an iPad could definitely see a future where DJ's will only need to turn up with a tablet with their choons on it. But for all those who currently have an iPad, its pretty much the case that just cable this recently released by Pioneer (for the general public to now optionally own) will al...

Ableton 9 rolls out with an official Ableton "Push" midi controller/instrument to accompany it

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, October 27, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Lets face it, Ableton's full monty no holds barred version of their software is hardly cheap at full RRP. Just the amount of creative potential it puts at its users fingertips is enough to see how it could realistically shape the future of DJing into a more of a real time production and remix type of performance workflow dynamic. Generally though unless you'd managed to bank roll off the back off connected interests or just had the money in general to buy it there's not much chance of most p...

Native Instruments want turntablists to Traktor

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, October 6, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Native instruments have suddenly decided that they need to represent in a more solid way on the vinyl emulation front by producing their own two channel mixer with built in audio interface for their Traktor software. I've seen lots of drool worthy images of the minimalist designed Z2 two channel NI Traktor mixer, but I've been trying to reserve blog wordage on it till some expert hands on feedback was more available on the DVS handling front. It's now almost been two weeks since seeing the ...

Pioneer's none industry standard DJ controller overkill... (...its a beautiful DJ tech type thing)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, October 4, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Controller after controller, for none to really make me want to throw down any words for them for not having had any hands on and only being able to just look on from afar for the main part. But all of a sudden the least likely of candidates suddenly throws down themselves with actual DJ controllerism hardware substance that even made me take a second look. It says Pioneer on it but there's just something about it that whiffs of  Numark's Ns6 Serato itch controller. In fact I'd say Pioneer's...

Contending the axed original Pacemaker device's position, the PDJ handheld DJ Controller...

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, October 4, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Having been a fan of the Pacemaker device before it was axed it wasn't really difficult to see why the PDJ handheld DJ Controller snagged my attention, but if the Pacemaker was a toy then this wasn't too far behind. Sure you might be able to achieve professional sounding results on it, but there's just no getting away from the fact that anything that could allow you to sound professional on such a miniature scale will always been deemed as a toy and nothing more. Even with the amount of care...

Look familiar? Yeah, its what Allen & Heath put out first...

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Friday, September 28, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

I guess I couldn't mention the NOX-606 without highlighting the fact that the layout looks remarkably similar to the Allen & Heath Xone 92 analogue mixer. (Those flappin' can stop flappin' now). In any case it just means that there's plenty of potential scope to move onto something familiar although vastly pricier as a pro grade mixer option that's held in much higher regard amidst the DJ elite if needs require or budget permits. But I guess the main difference here is that with the Behringe...

Behringer NOX 606, does "premium" at an entry level price (...awkward trade offs to consider too)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

The references of rave culture lives on, although kind of a little removed from the Roland sequencer and synth origins having forcefully been taken up and given over to Behringer's new range of multi-channel digital mixers instead. Behringer's new flagship NOX series sees a slew of multi channel mixers aptly containing number references in accordance to how many channels they have (with the exception of the 404 which strangely only has 2 channels) which goes right up to the 606 which has 6 st...

Behringer DDM-4000 Don't let the "budget" price miss-lead you

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, September 20, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

It looks like Behringer are at it again with time and learned from experience granting them the means to improve their game even further with their NOX range of pro to amateur targeted DJ mixers. As far as their audio gear production goes they've been doing it for a while, at least longer then many  of the other more commonly recognized "couldn't quite afford Technics, but still wanna spin and maybe move to Technics later" DJ equipment brand names had chance to try and re-align perceptions i...

Its no surprise really with Google's nexus 7 entering the UK market at an official 159 GBP RRP direct from Google toting much more powerful 1.3Ghz quad core processing power with Nvidia integra 3 graphics thrown in to boot for some serious portable gaming potential. Boasting 9 hours of continuous HD video playback on the 1280x800 native res screen and 300 hours of standby its hardly a slouch on the mains starved uptime front.  The only thing it lacks is regular built in mobile talkie stick c...

Pioneer XDJ Aero... Touted as the Pioneer player designed to please as many people as possible in many ways

With the event of Windows 8's release (with crazy speeds in testing so far) and the wider spread of 4G use in mainstream markets destined for the general mass consumer just on the horizon, its apt that Pioneer should put together their take on where the wire free highspeed times of now and the future should be moving as far as the craft of DJing is concerned. Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

The first steps of the Ableton 64-bit movement for the general consuming classes are now in motion. Current registered Ableton 8 users can head on over to the Ableton site to acquire a working 64-bit beta build of Ableton 8.4 right now.  However there are some limitations which include:

- No max for live support
- No bridge pluggin compatibility

Despite this it's said that they are working on trying to get a 64-bit versions of them on the go. You might ask what would be the purpose of the 64-bi...

More seeming DJ headgear style with actual substance for less of your dough

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Monday, July 2, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

It seems the Behringer image overhaul isn't merely style without substance if a recent review I stumbled across of Berhinger's new DJ headgear over at the newly revamped DJworx site (formally skratchworks) is anything to go off. But as head cans they're said to deliver more then adequately in the eardrum delivery department for said DJ purposes as far as audio dynamic is concerned. Faderfox has always been a firm favorite of mine for portable compact purpose built midi controllers, I first got hold of one when the LV2 dropped for general acquirement but I remember first clapping eyes on their brand of highly portable digital controllers as far back as the release of the LV1 and the use of Ableton 5 if not an earlier variant. But at 170 to 250 Euro for their newer base models of USB powered dedicated compact midi controllers they're not quite as budget friendly as they ...

It's been a while since their premium DJ centric cans were dropped for general consumer acquirement and they were certainly a departure from your more regular pro intended audio headgear on the design front. But as a further statement of the Scandinavian made pro audio intention they've put out a studio variant of their brandless brand of premium monitor headphones. As ever sound is everything when considering studio monitors but with no hands on there isn't much that I could say about it on...

17 inch laptop bags... (in a word...awkward)

17 inch laptops (of the none Macbook variety) are generally not that portable compared to their more reasonably sized 15 and under counter parts.  I only mentioned the Macbook thing because Apple's 17 inch Macbook pro in overall form factor is quite comparable to a fair number of 15 inch none Mac variants of laptops. I've generally found that the actual porting of such an unwieldy sized machine for under $50  is also made just that little bit more difficult due to the general lack of decent ...

It looks like Blackberry Playbook users have just that little bit more to go on with news of Tonium's a recent teaser of their upcoming Pacemaker app. There aren't actually any pointers as to how to go about acquirement of the Playbook Pacemaker app beta build that I could give as it seems to only be in the hands of a few select tech news outlets at this moment in time.

WTF?! What happened to Korg's entire DJ mixer range?!

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Sunday, April 1, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

At one time the DJ mix/remix section of Korg's website used to carry a whole bunch of specialists variants of their analogue DJ mixer for all styles whether you were more of the club DJ or battle turntablist scratch DJ leanings. Some of their mixers even allowed for the combination of both as hi-speed, low latency, smooth-glide-rail-sliders using light sensors were used across much of their range including their digital/analogue combination mixers too in the form of the Zero4 and Zero 8. Although I was a bit dubious of the name it was the first means I'd ever come across that allowed me to build a custom hardware setup to give me the ability to integrate a more traditional method of DJing using my prized and treasured Technics turntables in conjunction with a digital medium. Its been around for nearly 8 years since I first stumbled across DJdecks (time certainly does fly). At the time I was too into DJing with vinyl records to even consider ever using something like Ableton...

So what now? For all those still rocking the two turntable metaphor in home (whether on vinyl turntables or CDJ's) that want a tidy and clutter free way of placing it, you might want to take a look at this. It couldn't be described as anything other then visual candy for slightly easing the seeming manual complexity of pro DJ gear. Yeah it doesn't really bring anything new to the table in terms of functionality against many of the already availible options but it certainly does it in more style.

I pretty much missed the exclusive on this, but it looks like world renowned and UK based makers of pro industry audio hardware Allen & Heath went and did it again. This time they've gone digital with the XONE:DB4 DJ FX mixer. It boasts a dedicated looper on each of the 4 channels allowing you to sample up to a length of 4 bars and switch them up via the host of dedicated FX assigned to each of the channels. Basically it'll let you feel out and build new grooves, rhythms and patterns on th...

Technics finally pull the plug on their DJ turntables... (cue sound of a turntable winding down having just tripped over the power cable)

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Sunday, October 31, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

I had to see this on two separate sites before finally committing digital letters to a virtual page about it. It looks like Technics apparently finally decided to cease production on their iconic 1200 series DJ turntables. Ok these things were apparently built to last forever (if not a long time) but no doubt even this fantasy measure of almost infinite like durability will still gradually see a more realistic slow trickle of 1200 series turntable making their way to the Technics place in the...

Looks like AKAI are bringing to the table a lite version of their purpose built Ableton Live APC40 MIDI controller for which they've halved its numbering for the slightly smaller APC20. From what I can gather they've taken out a bunch of rotary controls in order to achieve its cropped and slightly leaner form factor for all the control elements to remain exactly the same size. After a price check of all the main UK DJ equipment suppliers (including HTFR and Westend DJ's) there doesn't seem to...
