Novation re-hash their launchpad midi controller (... adds 'mini' to its moniker)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, January 11, 2014, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear
words & image source/photographer : Eksovichea Tito Hak

The launchpad mini is essentially a more refined re-hash of the launchpad by novation. Although they've made it more compact and named it the 'mini' version, its in no way un-usably fiddly to use or handle, its still fully usable in a competent professional manner. In fact despite the downsize in dimensions the design language used has been totally revamped to throw minimalist clean lines at your eyeballs to feast on. More over there isn'...

Canon adds the 70D with new 20.2MP sensor and faster video focusing to their mid range pro/enthusiast line up

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Friday, July 5, 2013, In : Camera's

As far as D-SLR camera's are concerned there isn't really anything much bigger than the announcement that the likes of Canon will be updating their core mid range of pro and enthusiast D-SLR camera's by slights with the addition of a new 70D. Although initial news landed on my computer about 3 days ago there wasn't much that I thought about it at the time other than the 7D will probably drop in price, although let it be noted that various folk reckon that it wasn't intended as a replacement f...

quick hands on review of the Pacemaker DJ app for blackberry playbook

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, June 1, 2013, In : Tablets

Having used the original Pacemaker device and loved it whilst also being a seasoned user of vinyl turntables, I had quite high expectation of the Pacemaker app for the Playbook. It wasn't quite what I expected, but generally I reckon its still worth investigating if you do have a playbook since there's a free preview version of the app if you don't quite fancy shelling out 7.50GBP for the full thing. Canon 60D with 17-85mm EF-S USM lens ...quick hands on (. . . crisp 'n' sharp pictures as expected)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, In : Camera's

So I managed to get a quick 2 days hands on time with the canon 60D, what do I reckon? Well my wording doesn't fully do it justice as regards to the extent and depth of its shooting features, but overall if you're in the market for one it was all good. As always it might be wise to scope out the offerings from the likes of Nikon too before dropping a hefty wedge of this type of snapper gear and glass. I'm guessing that for most, when you do finally get this level of image quality or beyond yo...

Connect your iPad to a Pioneer USB controller with this WeCai cable... . . . allows for independent stereo main room out/post mix and pre-mix monitoring audio signals

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Thursday, April 18, 2013, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

I passed over it a couple of weeks ago, but the introduction of a single cable seems a bit more revolutionary then it did at the time. The idea of connecting a fully featured two deck metaphor controller to an iPad could definitely see a future where DJ's will only need to turn up with a tablet with their choons on it. But for all those who currently have an iPad, its pretty much the case that just cable this recently released by Pioneer (for the general public to now optionally own) will al...

.Blackberry OS 10 upgrade coming to Playbook this year... . . . official Skype app also arriving soon for Blackberry OS 10 on the Blackberry Z10 with video support.

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, April 13, 2013, In : Tablets

I was doing some research into the viability of owning a pre-Blackberry OS 10 device for ongoing device support into the future (as in before the Z10 was released). As it turns out, current Blackberry 6 and 7 devices will not being seeing any form of update to Blackberry 10 OS. However, even with the release of new Blackberry 10 OS devices (i.e. the Z10) the general crackberry consensus seems to be that Blackberry 7 will continue to be supported by Blackberry for quite some time yet to come....

The new tiny canon Rebel SL1 officially hits the European website under its none US EOS 100D name... also rocks a touch- screen

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, In : Camera's

It looks like the compact canon Rebel SL1 with full D-SLR capability has actually made it to the official European Canon website in its none US naming convention form. The significantly more compact size of their fully featured EOS 100D D-SLR might be just the thing to stop many of their once hardcore loyal customer base moving over to Sony NEX mirror-less camera's which Sony are making a killing on for their extremely convenient form factor and now proven image quality production.

Canon shrink their camera's even more for their upcoming next gen T5i and Rebel SL1 refresh...

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Saturday, March 23, 2013, In : Camera's

I used to think that in an alternate universe  where I had the money to upgrade my camera and wanted to stay with a compact interchangeable form factor instead of going full power picture box D-SLR mad with a Canon 5D mark3 or Sony Alpha 99 SLT that I'd move to the NEX-6 or 7. That was until canon announced their next gen D-SLR T5i and Rebel SL1. They've basically shrunk the upcoming D-SLR releases despite still accommodating full canon D-SLR lenses. What do I reckon of the latest Dell XPS machines?

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Monday, March 11, 2013, In : Laptops

From a design standpoint there wasn't really much to get the pulse racing as far as Dell machines were concerned despite some of their more visually pleasing efforts in recent years, and generally in not being in the market to buy a new machine there wasn't much that made it stand out from the million on one other companies selling iCore speced machines. I've had a browser tab open on the Chromebook pixel for days in not being quite sure what to say about it whist seeing other various bits on it from other sites. The extreme eyeball catching hardware design had me outright hooked but I couldn't quite figure out what I'd personally do with something that was exclusively locked down for running chrome OS at the price it was expected to be sold at even if I could afford it.

Blackberry Z-10 gets Pacemaker app

I was more than intrigued by Blackberry's Z10 whilst all the pre-release hype was circulating on the net. So much so that I even went to the extent of sniffing out many a "Mr blurry shaky hand cam" pictures of it. It was the lure of blackberry OS 10 that seemed most inviting based on where the Playbook had taken things. When the Z-10 was released I still generally remained reserved on blog wordage despite still keeping a watchful eye on the turn of opinion that would be praising it one day ...

Whats going on?! With recent news of HMV Canada apparently stepping in to put together a rescue effort for the UK stores it looks the whole saga has taken another twist. Camera gear in HMV music stores? To me that doesn't seem so strange an idea having lived in France for a while where they have stores like Fnac.  Fnac is a bit like the French equivalent of HMV. From what I've seen and know of Fnac, its pretty much the most prominent chain of high street/mall store in France to sell a compre...

With Blockbuster still looking for a buyer its kind of left their in store PC games section seriously undercutting online download providers like Steam and EA's Origin for some of the most current and biggest titles. I would have put a tenner down for Max Payne 3 (not even listed on the Blockbuster website) there and then if I wasn't totally peppered already.  It hardly got rave reviews when it first landed, and it pretty much got slated by most of the reviews I came across for it. The main claim being that it was an alright camera with excellent picture quality with up to 18.2 megapixels for a jpeg only pocket sized snapper. At well over £250 to £350 MSRP they reckoned they couldn't justify the slow focus performance and the LCD screen blanking out till it had captured all 5 to 10 frames fps and processed them whilst using burst mode, that's w...

Tough pad's made of Android  in ice cold sandwiches

More seriously though, the range of new of Panasonic Android 4.0 tough pad's do look well suited for professional industries across the board. The almost ridiculous level of enterprise class security found on their 7 and 10 inch Android tough pads is just something I'd never  expected to see on any type of consumer class Android device. Canon EOS EF lens mount adaptor for Sony NEX camera's (... Metabones new version called the speed booster)

So whilst looking into regular manual Canon EOS EF lens adaptors for Sony's E-mount standard I came across the Metabones Auto lens mount adaptor. Essentially its an adaptor that's equipped with a ROM that will let you attach and harness all the motorized features of Canon EOS EF lenses with a NEX camera body regardless of whether you're shooting video or stills. The original Metabones wasn't without its flaws from the video evidence I'd previously seen, and at $400+ it was a little expensive...

Whilst looking around I came across the OLYMPUS SZ-20, and I've not used an Olympus since the days when we had to pay to get roll film developed at a shop. So after much seeming speculation it looks like Valve turned up at CES with their chosen hardware to fill the shoes of their "Steam machine" in a bid to bring PC gaming into the living room space and onto the big screen. More seeming DJ headgear style with actual substance for less of your dough

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Monday, July 2, 2012, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

It seems the Behringer image overhaul isn't merely style without substance if a recent review I stumbled across of Berhinger's new DJ headgear over at the newly revamped DJworx site (formally skratchworks) is anything to go off. But as head cans they're said to deliver more then adequately in the eardrum delivery department for said DJ purposes as far as audio dynamic is concerned. You can check out the full hands on review of the Behringer HPX6000 by clicking this underlined word that reads...

Faderfox has always been a firm favorite of mine for portable compact purpose built midi controllers, I first got hold of one when the LV2 dropped for general acquirement but I remember first clapping eyes on their brand of highly portable digital controllers as far back as the release of the LV1 and the use of Ableton 5 if not an earlier variant. But at 170 to 250 Euro for their newer base models of USB powered dedicated compact midi controllers they're not quite as budget friendly as they ...

AIAIAI takes it into the studio with their TMA1 STUDIO cans

It's been a while since their premium DJ centric cans were dropped for general consumer acquirement and they were certainly a departure from your more regular pro intended audio headgear on the design front. But as a further statement of the Scandinavian made pro audio intention they've put out a studio variant of their brandless brand of premium monitor headphones. As ever sound is everything when considering studio monitors but with no hands on there isn't much that I could say about it on...

Wicked Lasers reckons people will want 32 inch mock laser light sabers that use real retina burning lasers (…predictably right)

Posted by Eksovichea Tito Hak on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, In : Toys

Light Sabers are cool. If they were real and legal I'd own one, but then again I can't help but think it'd be too much like if I'd somehow managed to get hold of a couple of Desert Eagles, I'd generally have a greater propensity to want to live in certain parts of the US where use of guns are perfectly legal for home protection use and try to tempt the onset of a break and enter in the knowledge I'd have some over the top paired Jon Woo hand cannon capability to take down any potential victim...

17 inch laptop bags... (in a word...awkward)

17 inch laptops (of the none Macbook variety) are generally not that portable compared to their more reasonably sized 15 and under counter parts.  I only mentioned the Macbook thing because Apple's 17 inch Macbook pro in overall form factor is quite comparable to a fair number of 15 inch none Mac variants of laptops. I've generally found that the actual porting of such an unwieldy sized machine for under $50  is also made just that little bit more difficult due to the general lack of decent ...

Often I just skip over the various number of portable integrated keyboard solutions that various manufacturers come up with for the iPad. Street fighter X Tekken has finally landed

It's Street fighter X vs. Tekken in the street fighter X world. This kind of thing was just unthinkable when Tekken first landed on the scene. But a cross Street Fighter Tekken reality? There's something quite appealing to my more juvenile tendencies. But then having gotten engrossed with the whole Tekken thing somewhere near its launch there was no chance that any of the Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 turbo or Street Fighter X cartridges would see the light of day ever again.  Not even ...

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Thursday, October 28, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Not content with just updating their main stable range of midi controllers it looks like they've also gotten into some sort of collaborative effort with Glansmann Digital DJ Solutions which seems to have spawned what can only be best described as a full 4 track midi controller with glide rail sliders going by the name "4 midi loop". Yeah that's right, its pretty much a midi controller that takes the entire layout of a fully featured 4 channel DJ mixer with all the rotary knobs, buttons, and s...

Faderfox see's a 3rd round of refreshes across the entire range (DJ3, DL3, DX3, FX3, and FT3)

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Thursday, October 28, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

There's  probably more then a fair few Ableton and Traktor users out there that are familiar with Faderfox's line of ultra compact purpose built Midi controllers including myself having picked up a second generation Ableton controller a while back for it to have pretty much always played some part in my rig in some form or other ever since. Well it looks like its out with the old and in with the new as the entire range sees a complete refresh for the third iteration which apparently was partl...

Hard to find Korg Zero4 cases...

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Despite Korg's Zero4 DJ mixer having been out for quite some time there generally still seems to be a lack of some kind of off the shelf flight case that you can buy to help protect it from any unexpected bumps and knocks whilst generally transporting it due to its non standard size. Unless that  is you live in the US, in which case you can look to eBay for a custom ready made ATA flight case from the New York Case company. They ship anywhere within the US at the price of $99 with free shippi...

Finally bridging the gap...

Having nearly fallen off my seat...

Oh man I haven't had a rush like this since my last memorable big night out during the peak of the honey moon period in the thick of my back to back disco biscuit chomping days or possibly even the first time I got it on with my now Missus. What was it to have got my haemoglobin pumper doing serious overtime but in a good way whilst leaving me more then a little overwhelmed as I tap this out at a million miles per hour?

Having previously visited the Ableto...

BEHOLD!! The Laptop hum eliminator/phono ground loop isolator!!!

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Thursday, October 21, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Hardly Hi-tech but damned useful...

I think many a digital audio DJ has come across this whist testing DJ or digital audio production software in conjunction with their built in internal audio sound card/device on their laptops. I'm talking about the audio hum which makes many think hum free audio is only achievable via some sort of external purpose made audio interface. (myself included)

Even more strangely, on my particular machine I don't actually get any audio hum when monitoring the buil...

VMware 7.1.1 update out now

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, In : software

If you already have version 7.0 its definitely worth the upgrade to 7.1.1 since its free to upgrade. There's a definite noticeable increase in speed and everything generally ran much more smoothly too. I was able to comfortably run 2 VM's simultaneously in unity mode over the host OS (although it was acceptably ever so slightly laggy given the base specifications of the machine) even though my system was only equipped with a base P8400 core2duo. VM boot times significantly decreased along wit...

core i5 refresh for HP's TM2 tablet

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Friday, July 23, 2010, In : Tablet PC

It looks like the TM2 isn't quite ready to fade into the background of yesterdays already covered multi-touch tablet tech news quite just yet with their soon to be latest refresh. All of which ties in quite nicely with my previous post as their latest update brings to the table a corei5 for all the more security conscious amongst us that need or want a little more processing power and maybe also some lag free on the fly data encryption to keep all your digital doings free from fewer prying ey...

Native intel core i5 and core i7 support for open source 3rd party data encryption

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Thursday, July 22, 2010, In : security

If open source is your thing with money being a bit tight and you don't already have some sort of inbuilt hardware solution via a TPM, here's one of the most talked up real time encryption utilities out there in its latest iteration for the price of what you already paid for your gear that you intend to down load it with and use it on. The only problem is that you need a pretty hefty processor in order to get it running in real time with a relatively negligible performance hit.  However it lo...

Of course I'm only joking... at least I think I am. Anyhow Kinect (formally Natal)? What's that? Apparently these things read your mind and are out now for a mere $299, which is about the price of a console system. I'm guessing its going to be quite some time before we see these in the average punters abode ju...

Dual touchscreen computing device finally makes it to consumer market reality... (...in a few months time that is)

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Monday, June 21, 2010, In : Tablet PC

We've seen concepts of dual touch screen laptop like devices kicking around for some time now, the first of which I remember originally being penned in for a potential future OLPC design that would have probably never made it off the drawing board anyway especially at the price they wanted to bring it into existence at. It wasn't that I doubted that it could be done for the low price that they were suggesting in any realistic way, but with all the politics and many-many traffic lights still o...

iPhone 4 will be making an appearance on 3 mobile with its UK release

As far a all things tech related go this bit of news is already growing fuzzy mould on the edge of my imaginary desktop during my one day lapse, but word has it that 3 mobile are going to be carrying the iPhone for the first time ever with the release of the glass clad (front and back) 4th installment of their phone over in the UK.  Pre orders will be taken by the 5th mobile provider June 15th. AKAI cuts some stuff off the APC40, calls it APC20...

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

Looks like AKAI are bringing to the table a lite version of their purpose built Ableton Live APC40 MIDI controller for which they've halved its numbering for the slightly smaller APC20. From what I can gather they've taken out a bunch of rotary controls in order to achieve its cropped and slightly leaner form factor for all the control elements to remain exactly the same size. After a price check of all the main UK DJ equipment suppliers (including HTFR and Westend DJ's) there doesn't seem to...

Concept for charging your phone this festival summer whilst physically responding to the music in your own special way in a field

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Monday, June 7, 2010, In : Misc

This is where interests could pretty much come into conflict since I'm pushing 3 on my site in an attempt to make a bit of pocket money. However when it comes to getting your groove on and largin' it in the interest of keeping the party vibe alive and possibly doing a little to contribute to the effort of energy conservation (or very little at all if to remain a concept) in order to keep your talkie stick talkable the party effort pretty much wins hands down. Free Mu software for the Lemur (The official multi-touch Ableton software for it via Max 4 Live)

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Saturday, June 5, 2010, In : Digital audio Production & DJ gear

I'm surprised I hadn't stumbled across this earlier but it looks like the Jazz mutant Lemur controller finally landed itself an official Ableton Live multi-touch control interface going by the name of Mu. You can download it absolutely free direct from the official Jazz mutant Website but obviously you'll need a Lemur multi-touch controller to put it on. Apparently the whole thing requires zero configuration and is entirely plug and play. Despite the ready to go out of the box theme behind it...

I haven't had much time to dust off my original PSP let alone think about the slimmed down version since it pretty much does all the same things as the "slim" and most current "GO" versions but obviously not quite as elegantly on the form factor front. But those of us lucky enough to be knocking about the UK (as well as other parts of Europe and the middle east)  might just find enough reason in the fact that Sony want to give you 10 full games to play on it gratis (downloadable from the Play...

Yet another Nokia smart phone with a physical qwerty keypad, but at an expected 180 euro in and  around about 3Q 2010 its definitely impressive for the price considering they also throw in 10.2MB/s category 9 3G capability (most folk only likely to see 2MB/s category 5 performance limited by regular standard 3G service providers). With that you'll also get Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi being something that’s usually not included on fresh to market Nokia smart messaging phones at this kind of entry price) an...

Core i3 TM2t finally lands for under a grand

The first of the TM2t refreshes finally lands capable of turning 2.13GHz of cycles on the upside over 2 cores on a core i3. I guess in trying to keep pricing under the $1000 mark they could hardly be throwing in a discrete GPU option into the mix, however as far as integrated GPU options go you couldn't really go far wrong in using a corei3 since it includes the GPU directly on the actual core i3 processor for some serious integrated bottle neck free HD visual feedback when going about doing ...

Staying on the theme of machines with extremely thin writing pad like thickness, for all those who enjoy rapidly stroking their keys with pro like efficiency in comfort and yearn for .65" (yes, thats point-six-five) aluminum clad portability there's the DELL Vostro V13. There's also the added bonus of a 13.3" LED screen which would no doubt help toward assisting those of us with more myopic tendencies. One day all Netbooks will be this slim whilst being as affordable as today's more common entry to mid range offerings. Just not today or any time in the near future. But then again Sony having more then done their bit can pretty much do anything they like with their atom powered "ultra portables" bearing their logo since its evidently no skin off their chin to be putting it out at such premium. Affordable general consumer targeted tablet PC experience getting better?

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Sunday, May 9, 2010, In : Tablet PC

So I've finally decided I'm going to have to include stuff that don't yet quite have groundings as far as consumer availability goes since there was a whole slew of gadgetry antics I wanted to mention but had to leave out for not fitting the criteria of actually being currently available with a price tag. But then what is tech talk if we can't flow futuristic as it were.

I wouldn't normally include something like this since its still just a concept with no word on pricing.

If I had the funds and resources to bring an accessory to market for the iPad this would have been it but with a few more bells and whistles. It would certainly save you having to carry yet another separate machine (i.e. a netbook) if you already have an iPad or intend on buying one.  However the only thing that had me in a bit of a pickle whilst mentally mulling it over was the thought of...

More design conscious netbook alternatives with netbook like price tags

Posted by Eksovichea Hak on Thursday, April 29, 2010, In : Ultra portables laptops

Staying on the theme of getting a lot more bang for your buck at the top end of the netbook price range, I just happened to stumble across the Lenovo IdeaPad U350. I was initially a little hesitant about putting this up as many reviews were citing its general lack of speed as a major weakness for such an expensive machine at its original recommended retail price of around £700. But to be getting netbook like performances at well under £400 (roughly the price of top end Netbooks in the UK...

Netbooks are great and all but when you start getting into the upper esculents of the segment in terms of their pricing it makes you wonder what else you could be getting for your 400 pounds. For all those more comfortable with the relatively safe bargain hunters grounds of eBay 400 quid could pretty much land you a decent second hand 15" laptop with less pokey specs in terms of number crunching power and screen real-estate. Sure at 400 quid it might not be the most sharpest of offerings i...

Although I still haven't quite made it to version 8 it looks like yet another updates been dropped now taking us to 8.1.3. From what I can gather the only major thing to have been included for this round is native support for Novation's ZeRO SL MK2 MIDI controller nostalgically numbered after one of the most iconic pieces of kit to come out of DJ culture. Other then that this thing has absolutely nothing to do with it aside from the fact its another bit of flashy DJ kit for those with the ...

Amidst all this forbidden fruity tablet talk that’s clogging the tech blogosphere it kind of made me wonder whether tablet computers in general had come any further. Sure they're more typically business targeted which is a far cry from the just released sit back and relax touchy feely bitten take on it all. But if it were told it to put its business certification in the draw to become a full time fully fledged audio/midi sequencing producer and DJ would it have what it takes?

Its not exactly something that you could pick up at your high street store especially with the $15,000 price tag. But as an exercise in contemporary design that works 10 out of 10. Apparently this thing is supposed to be built like a brick s**thouse as the glass is claimed to be bullet proof. Not sure I'd pay $15,000 for it on my budget but it's definitely different. Netbooks are pretty easy to come by these days but one gripe I've always had about them was their awful battery life which for most netbook owners is around 2 to 3 hours. All in all pretty comparable to a regular  full sized backbreaking notebook which seems to make the selling point of power sipping Atom processors being able to consuming significantly less power for longer uptimes away from the mains a bit pointless really.

Even the term notebook suggests something fuss free, slim, light an...
