It might be worth considering from time to time that our star is not the only star within the almost infinitesimal scales of the universe. They'll also be a number of them that will have a solar system capable of supporting life in some form or other.  There will be many that have existed for millions of years even before our own. It would be naive to think that "intelligent" life beyond our own didn't exist before ours, and you don't have to be a paranoid conspiracy theorist to be able to rationalize that against something as vast as the universe in size.
